Why did you choose to work in mental health?
“I’ve seen first-hand the difference good quality mental health care can make in people’s lives. I’ve been on the other end of the phone, desperate for an appointment for myself or a loved one, and I know what it’s like to wait six months for a consultation that turns out to be another dead end. I don’t have the reserves to be a clinician, but being part of a team that helps people in need is very important to me.”
What makes Avive different?
“I was drawn to Avive’s commitment to trauma-informed care. Many clinics and treatment models presume that patients are blank slates, with typical neurotypes and predictable responses. Avive acknowledges that everyone’s history is different and complex.”
What’s something your colleagues might not know about you?
“I’m a pretty open book. When I’m not working, I care for my two sons who are both autistic with ADHD. I used to have hobbies but juggling their appointments and supporting their emotional regulation is a full-time job these days. It definitely keeps me passionate about the need for quality and understanding mental health providers.”
What do you love about your job: What keeps you coming back each day?
“I know the difference it can make to have an understanding and empathetic person on the other end of the phone when you’re reaching out for mental health support for yourself or a loved one. I’m lucky to work in a team where we all feel strongly about ensuring that every patient feels heard and valued. Emily, my manager, and my coworkers are all incredibly neuro-affirming and understand the ways my own autism impacts how I work. I’m very lucky to be in a supportive team that helps bring out the best in me.”
Avive’s values are “Care. Empower. Innovate.” Which resonates with you the most?
Care. Mental health impacts everything about someone’s quality of life. Clinicians and organisations need to always be aware of the power they hold and be motivated by genuine care for patients.
